All a stand up comic has to do to get laughs is to mention New Jersey! Yes, there are better states to live in with better housing, lower costs of living, better politics, more Christians, and bigger churches. But it is all about calling. As the Father sent Jesus into the world, so Jesus sends us (John 17:18). When we get to heaven we will have paradise; for now we have a job to do!
In considering one's calling, remember Elijah the prophet. Elijah was sent to minister to the apostate country of Northern Israel where there were only 7,000 true believers in the entire region (1 Kings 19:18). On the other hand, the country of Southern Israel was the more godly place to live. Any follower of Jehovah would rather live in the South under King Jehoshaphat than to live under the ungodly rule of Ahab and Jezebel.
But God loved the people of Northern Israel and sent to them Elijah and Elisha. The greatest prophets were not sent to the safest place, but to the most needy place. To aid their ministry God gave Elijah and Elisha the power to do extra-ordinary miracles, a power which was never given to the prophets in the South. The will of God will not put you where the grace of God will not keep you.
If you are a missionary to some tough front line position, take heart. Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not receive many times as much at this time and in the age to come, eternal life.”
