Frequently asked Bible Questions/How do we know God exists

How do we know God exists?

The Bible states that the incredible creation we see around us and the soul we feel within us is all we need to give us evidence that there is a creator.

Psalm 19:1

The heavens are telling of the glory of God;

And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.

Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

“Does God exist” is a good question, but an even better question is “If God exists, why does He seemingly hide himself?  After all, if God wanted us to believe in His existence couldn’t He clear up all doubt by showing His face?” The answer is found in the Word of God:

1.  Sin has separated man from God so that God deals with man by not showing Himself directly to mankind.

Isaiah 59:1-2

 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not so short that it cannot save;

Nor is His ear so dull that it cannot hear.

But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God,

And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.

2.  God shows Himself to those who love Him through an unseen work of the Spirit of God in the heart.  By this means God deliberately confounds and confuses the wicked, but brings salvation to the true seekers.   The scientist Pascal stated, “The same creation that reveals God to those who love Him, hides Him from those who hate Him.”

The disciples of Christ wanted Jesus to show Himself to the world that everyone would believe.  Jesus explained why this was not necessary.

John 14:22-26

 Judas (not Iscariot) *said to Him, “Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?” Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make Our abode with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me. These things I have spoken to you, while abiding with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

If Jesus did show His glory and power to everyone in the world, there would be belief.  But God is not looking for belief because even Satan and the demons believe in God (James 2:19)!  God is looking for loyalty and love and this is best tested and displayed by faith and not by sight.   Not seeing God physically will never in itself cause a man to be spiritually lost.  Those who love God in truth will come to Him by faith.   Faith is as good as sight for the one who loves the truth.
